Lever Foundation is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) public charity working to creating a more humane and sustainable food supply chain in Asia and beyond. Nick Cooney founded Lever Foundation in 2017, and continues to serve as its Board Chair.
Lever Foundation’s team of 30 across the Greater China Region, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Korea, Malaysia and Singapore, as well as in Europe and the Americas, work on two program areas that deliver major impact across key food sustainability metrics (GHG emissions, resource conservation, animal suffering, and public health) with each dollar spent.
First, Lever Foundation works to increase the consumption of plant-based foods (such as beans, legumes, nuts, tofu, grains, vegetables, and plant proteins) by helping food companies set and implement policies to increase the use of such foods. Lever also carries out digital marketing campaigns to educate consumers and help them choose more plant-based foods, and provides support to entrepreneurs working to grow startup companies in the sector.
Second, Lever Foundation works to upgrade animal protein by helping food companies set and implement policies to eliminate the most harmful industrial animal farming practices from their supply chains. Lever also supports and guides farmers in transitioning toward improved systems.
Since launching operations in 2018 the Foundation has helped over 200 food companies set improved sourcing policies, including policies which significantly reduce GHG emissions, land use, and water use, which shift tens of millions of meals per year to plant-based foods, and which will move an estimated thirty million animals per year out of the most harmful industrial animal farming systems.
